Louis Brennangyro monorail

Interesting history of the gyro monorail to be found on Wikipedia
The small Louis Brennan Wiki page here.

His invention was a mechanically controlled set of gyro's that could keep up a 20 ton railwaycar running on a single track.
The mechanically interconnected counter rotating gyro's were forced to rotate so that the combined precessing force would righten the monorail. The Patent can be found on the gyros.biz website
A first glimpse of how it works is the below drawing.

Peter Healy made a Brennan style stabilization which is very stable Youtube
Note that therotational axes of the gyro's are horizontal (as with Brennan) contrary to almost all other examples on the internet including Lit.

That the Brennan inventions works quite well can be seen from the pictures of children in the model car. The one with the boy showing the transition from the rail to the steel cable and the girl seems suspended in mid air.

The last reference (for now) is Dave Woolard who had some very interesting gyrobike simulations on the internet. I cannot find him anymore .... But I copied one of his prictures, lets hope his simulations come online again some time.

Cycling Backwards and sideways.

Why not make a bicycle with propulsion through a flexible drive and then add a knob to turn you position pedalling ;-)

Lots of developments in bicycle gearing the last couple of years.
The Pinion system has an almost lateral approach as they decided to put the gearing where the force is put unto the bicycle, the "pinion"
Their website.

I like there approach a lot and tests seem to show it works briliantly, with a belt drive this could be close to the ideal bicycle with current technology.

In their favour:
- excellent gear placement
- sequential shifting
- shiften both under power and while standing
- good weight distrubution
- sealed system.

Not so favourable:
- needs spcial frame
- expensive
- still a startup, so how will it be in a couple of years..

The Suprine Machinery company is proud of their recumbent motorcyle, the Suprine Exodus.
The presentation is on their website.

Interesting prototype, unclear is if they plan any streamlined bodywork.

Bicycle rowing, Derk Thijs,

When looking at rowing bicycles one designer seems to have really solved the problem, Derk Thijs.
The story of Derk's rowing bicycles is pretty long and started with his visually best bike. These vertical "oars" are a pleasing sight.

Below you see the evolution, most photographs are from his own history page.

Derk has rowed some extraordinay distances (paris- rotterdam) with his bikes and also had some incredible records (45,1 km in one hour), Alpe d'Huez, tour de France one day in advance of teh peloton, built streamlines etc.
